Spam ‘er No?

I remember my parents making me a sandwich as a kid, of coarse not really knowing what the mystery meat was. My mom, who was a very good cook, whom I trusted with my life, had never made me anything I didn’t like. What was the sandwich? It was toasted (on bread or a bun), meat with cheese. What was the meat? It was Spam! Many of you might only know the word Spam when it means receiving unwanted emails offering you great deals on viagra or links to free x-rated websites like www.tubev.sex but I am referring to the tinned meat version of Spam, it’s a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. We didn’t have it often, but when we did, there was always a part of me that was like…..why are we eating this canned mystery meat? The funny thing is…..is that it really wasn’t that bad. What’s even more strange, is that I have been thinking about making it for my kids, simply because they have never tried it. But, my wife and kids completely refuse, and it is not even allowed in my house! I have not had Spam for over 30 years, and the way it looks, that will be the last time.

FYI – Spam is so popular in Hawaii, it is known as ‘Hawaiian steak’.

According to the Spam website, The true root of the island’s love for SPAM® products goes back to World War II, when the luncheon meat was served to GIs. By the end of the war, SPAM® products were adopted into local culture, with Fried SPAM® Classic and rice becoming a popular meal. The unique flavor quickly found its way into other Hawaiian cuisine, from SPAM® Fried Wontons to SPAM® Musubi , and SPAM® products became a fixture in breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Today you’ll find SPAM® dishes served everywhere from convenience stores to restaurants, reflecting a demand Why is the SPAM® brand a household name?, that is unmatched by any place in the world.
