Beautiful Place, Unusual Name: Spread Eagle, WI.
I personally grew up on a lake in Spread Eagle and to this day it is still one of my favorite places to be. The area is small and somewhat secluded, but a go to for many out-of-towners that either own a vacation home or come to visit family that already live there full time. The perfect combination of back roads, lakes, snowmobile trails, and woods, Spread Eagle offers plenty of relaxation and fun.
How did Spread Eagle get it’s name?
Many people relate the name to the days of prohibition and Al Capone (Evidently he actually owned a casino/brothel right in Spread Eagle on the Chain of Lakes) as the area was a popular hang-out for the gangster and his crew. But according to Wikipedia, the lake chain was named “Spread Eagle” because when seen from the sky, the chain resembles an eagle with wings spread.
There are numerous other lakes in the Spread Eagle area as well as the Spread Eagle Barrens State Natural Area which is a 7,155-acre (2,896 ha) protected area just off of U.S. 2 in Florence County, Wisconsin, USA. READ MORE HERE
