Brewers vs Marlins 1 in Hospital, 3 ejected and 1 removed by his own team
Milwaukee Brewers win 4-2 against vs Miami MarlinsĀ but not before 4 people ejected 1 taken to hospital and 1 removed by his own team
Brew Crew vs. Marlins fans saw Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins get nailed in the face with a fast ball in the top of the fifth inning of Thursday nights game. Right hander Mike Fiers of the MilwaukeeĀ Brewers was the one that threw the pitch and as soon as it hit you saw him throw his hands up, showing that he was shocked that it hit him. After the game he was clearly still upset that he threw that pitch andĀ made this comment,
“I just want to send my thoughts and prayers to Giancarlo Stanton. You never think of throwing at somebody like that. Never in my life has that happened. I just feel very, very sad that I hit him. I’m sorry to [his] teammates, their fans, his family. It’s just tough.”
Stanton was on the ground for nearly five mintues while be looked at by medical staff. He was eventualy taken from Miller Park to a nearby hospital with his dad traveling with him.
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com later reported that “Stanton suffered a facial laceration requiring stitches, multiple facial fractures and dental damage.”
Stantion is at the time the NL home run leader and was the looking to be the MVP. When the event occurred it appeared that when he swung the bat it was more in self defense than actually to hit the ball, however it counted as a strike and not a hit by pitch.
“I’ve never seen a guy get hit in the mouth and called for a swing,” Redmond told reporters. “For the first-base ump to say he swung at that pitch, when [Stanton is] coughing up blood… what a joke.”
Then when play resumed, Reed Johnson, was hit on the hand what would have been Stantons third pitch. The Marlins being already pretty hot under the collar that their MVP was at the hospital got even more heated when the umpires handed down the decision that Johnson had swung at that pitch and it was strike three.
Casey McGehee started yelling at the umpires and Fiers was tauntingĀ and yelling at the visitors dugout to join them on the field. Then it was a mess. The benches cleared and emotions were boiling over. No one got hit and no one was hurt but it set off a series of ejections. McGehee and Marlins Manager Mike Redmond were ejected and the Brewers decided to pull Fiers from the game. The umpires warned that the next suspicious pitch would lead to more ejections.Ā Then for the final ejections of the game, in the bottom of the 6th Marlins Anthony De Sclafani hit Carlos Gomez in the elbow which lead to the pitchers eject along with the bench coacg Rob Leary.
